@women_power is currently about creating a space on Twitter where women can come and find other women - and indeed men - with whom to network.

I do think in order to do this, however, we need to have some basic principles/ideas in place, which outline what @women_power is about and currently seeking to achieve:

An online Twitter resource focused primarily on empowering women.
Mechanisms in place which weed out unethical followers, and thereby ensure we have a safe list of 'followers' which people can use and access.
Creating a strong 'following' resource, which will also support empowering women.
Creating a space where we can raise issues about empowering women.
Working towards developing extensions to the space which will meet our needs as women on the web.

how @women_power started

@women_power is an initiative which was started on 6 July 2009 during a #rebootbritain discussion about women on the web that suggested there is a need to create an empowering online space for women to network.

The discussion was sparked by an all female panel: Joanne Jacobs (social media expert), MT Rainey (Horses Mouth), Meghan Ashe (Non-Society), and Sarah Lacy (Travelling Geeks), and raised a number of issues, but in particular, it suggested that women need a space where they can feel safe in interacting and networking.

So, during that discussion, I started a public group @women_power on Twitter, and tweeted Joanne asking for her support. Networking in action right from the start. Over the course of the next few days, I will be putting my initial thoughts about what I think we need to create. I am hoping that through Twitter, however, we can make this a truly networked effort.

Initially, I think we need to build this from the bottom up, as I believe this will hold far more sustainable and enduring value for us all. So let's get networking both on and offline and get more empowering women to join our initiative to create a positive space on the web for us, starting with Twitter!
